Want your homebrew on tap at the Witch's Hat Brewery?

Simply add Battle of the Brews to your cart and tell us the BJCP style category of your homebrew in the notes section at checkout.  Then, drop your homebrew at our retail location at 226 S. Lafayette St. South Lyon, MI 48178 between September 1 and October 22, 2017 and you're entered to win.  The homebrew that wins Best of Show will win the grand prize and have their recipe on tap at the Witch's Hat Brewing Co. for 30 days!

Final judging party will be on November 11, 2017 at the Witch's Hat Brewery in South Lyon, MI.  Your submission receipt serves as your ticket to the event!



Competition Rules and Information:

1. How many and what kinds of bottles are accepted? Submit two (2) bottles per entry: crown-capped; 10-22 ounces; brown or green glass. Corked bottles up to 750ml are also acceptable; however, you must crimp a crown cap over the cork. Corked homebrews should submit two (2) 375ml bottles or one (1) 750ml bottle per entry. Bottles must be clean, and free of inked or paper labels and other identifying marks. Obliterate any lettering or graphics on the cap with a permanent black marker. For each entry use a rubber band to attach one bottle identification form to each bottle. DO NOT USE GLUE OR TAPE.

2. What are the entry fees? $10 for the first entry, and $5 per additional entry, maximum of 5 entries per person.  Entry fees are non-refundable.

3. When are the entry deadlines? All entries must be received between September 1 and October 22, 2017.

4. How do I enter?

5. What style of beer is accepted? Accepted styles include any BJCP category or subcategory beer. Meads and ciders are not accepted.

6. Which category do I enter? Enter your homebrew into the category you feel it will perform best. Judges will not see your entry form, nor will they reclassify your entry. The Battle of the Brews Competition uses the BJCP 2015 style guidelines for judging beer.

7. What are the categories? You will submit your beers to be judged in one of four contest categories.

     A. Army (Ales) Categories 1, 5, 7B, 7C, 9, 10, 11, 12A, 12B,  13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22B-D, 23, 24, 25,26

     B. Navy (Lagers) Categories 2, 3, 4, 6, 7A, 8

     C. Marine Corp (IPAs) Categories 12C, 21A, 21B, 22A

    D. Air Force (Specialty type beers) Categories 27-34

8. When is the judging? Preliminary round will be November 6th and is closed to the public, Final Judging will take place at the Witch's Hat Brewery on November 11th. The judging panels will be compromised of BJCP certified judges, professional brewers and select novice judges.  Your entry receipt acts as your ticket to the event on November 11th.

9. What are the awards? Awards will be determined by Scrooge & Barley Inc. and be given (depending on number of entrants) for third, second, and first place for each category. A Best of Show will be awarded to the beer with the highest overall cumulative score on their score sheets. The winner of Best of Show will win the grand prize of having their beer on tap at the Witch's Hat Brewing Co. for 30 days.

How to Enter for a Chance to Win

Starting Monday, August 20, 2017, through Sunday, October 22, 2017 visit scroogeandbarley.com, register your homemade beer for the “Battle of the Brews” contest to compete in a best taste contest. All eligible entrants will be invited to attend the “Battle of the Brews” event on Friday November 11, 2016 from 4pm-10pm at Witch’s Hat Brewing Company located at 601 S. Lafayette St., South Lyon, MI 48178.  Entries must be received by 5:00 pm (ET) on Sunday October 22, 2017 to be eligible to participate in the contest.  Entrants need not be present at the Battle of the Brews event to be eligible to win.  Entrants must bring two (2) bottles of their homemade brew to Scrooge & Barley for contest, and Scrooge & Barley will bring the beers to the judges to taste.  By entering, participants certify that they personally made their submitted brew at home, using ingredients that are safe for human consumption and observing sanitary best practices.

All contest entries will become the property of Scrooge & Barley and the Witch’s Hat and will not be acknowledged or returned. 

At the conclusion of the Battle of the Brews event, one (1) Best of Show Grand Prize winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, in their sole discretion.  Winning brew will be selected based on taste, drinkability, and originality.


One (1) Grand prize will be awarded: the opportunity to have the winner’s submitted homemade beer on tap for 30 days at The Witch’s Hat in South Lyon, MI. Prize has no cash value.

Additional Prizes will be given (depending on number of entrants) for third place, second place, and first place for each category. 

Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to substitute any prize with one of equal or greater value.  Winner may not request prize substitution.  Prize is non-transferable and may not be claimed or used by any person other than the winner.  Winner must claim prize by completing all required paperwork in person as instructed by Sponsors. Prize not claimed as instructed will be forfeited. 


All entrants must be at least 21 years old and legal residents of the United States. Employees (including their immediate families and members of the same household) of Witch’s Hat, Scrooge & Barley, their respective affiliates, promotion sponsors, advertising and promotional agencies are eligible to participate in having their brews judged for feedback but are not eligible for any prizes. The term “immediate family” includes spouses, siblings, parents and legal guardians, children and legal wards, grandparents, and grandchildren, including “in-laws.” Void where prohibited.


By entering, all participants  release and hold harmless the promotion Sponsors and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agents (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from any and all liability and any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this contest and any prize won. Winner will be required to sign a form releasing the Released Parties from all liability in connection with the contest and the award of the prize before claiming the prize. 


Sponsors undertake no liability or responsibility, and make no warranties, express or implied, with respect to the performance of the prize(s) awarded, for any failure to perform or negligent performance of any service provider, or for any other risk, incident or damage, direct or indirect, relating to or arising out of the contest, including (but not limited to) cancelations, postponements, delays or other scheduling changes; missed events or connections or inability of winner to attend; inclement weather; and accident, injury, death, damage or expense arising from or occurring during the use of the prize, or travel to/from or attendance at any event relating to the contest, by the winner and/or winner’s guest(s).  Sponsors are not responsible for technical, hardware or software failure or malfunctions, lost or unavailable network or other telecommunications connections, or lost, late, misdirected, damaged, illegible, inaccurate, incomplete, garbled, disconnected, or delayed contest entries or communications, whether caused by the sender or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or used in this contest, or by any human error which may occur in the execution of this contest.  If, for any reason, the contest is not capable of being conducted as planned, including but not limited to infection by computer virus, bug, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or other causes beyond the control of Sponsors, management reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest and/or determine an alternate method of awarding the prize(s).


Entry into any contest constitutes full permission for Sponsors and their respective affiliates to broadcast and/or to photograph or publish the participant's name, voice, recorded comments, submitted video entry, biographical information, face and likeness, in any medium, without compensation.


If required by applicable law, Sponsors will report the total value of the prize to the IRS and will furnish winner with a federal Form 1099.  Winner may be required to provide his/her social security number to the Sponsor for tax reporting purposes, and is solely responsible for payment of all taxes incurred as a result of the award of a prize.


Failure to conform to all contest rules, or any fraud or other illegal or inappropriate conduct on the part of a contestant or on a contestant’s behalf, will result in the contestant's disqualification and forfeiture of any prize won.  Sponsor reserves the right to rule ineligible entrants who, in Sponsors’ sole judgment, engage in abusive conduct with respect to any contest or promotion conducted by Sponsors or their affiliates.  Sponsors reserve the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify this Contest and these Official Rules at any time, which changes will become effective upon announcement.  By taking part in this contest, participants agree to be bound by these rules and all decisions of the judges, who are employees of Sponsors and whose decisions with respect to all aspects of the contest are final and binding.  Copies of written contest rules and, where required by law, the list of winners are available during regular business hours at Scrooge & Barley, 226 S. Lafayette, South Lyon, MI 48178 and at Witch’s Hat, 601 S. Lafayette, South Lyon, MI 48178, for 60 days after the contest concludes. 

As a condition to participating in this Contest, each entrant agrees that any and all disputes that cannot be resolved between the parties, and all causes of action arising out of or in connection with this Contest shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, exclusively before a court located in Oakland County, Michigan, having competent jurisdiction, which court shall apply the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to the conflicts of law principles thereof. The entrant and Sponsors hereby waive any and all right to trial by jury. If any provision of these Official Rules is declared or found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be illegal, unenforceable or void, then such provision will be null and void but each other provision hereof not so affected will be enforced to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
